COSMIC INDIFFERENCE
"Why did this happen to me?"
Said she, quaint with a smile.
But, by the tone of her please,
She placed her god on trial.
"It's cosmic indifference."
Crass, came my overt reply.
And it didn't relinquish
The sorrow caught in her eyes.
"How could this happen to me?"
Says the woman, says the man.
Held captive by thoughts, not free,
From some obscure, divine plan.
"Why did this happen to me?"
Said he, tongue-tied in cliché.
By my virtuosity,
What else was there I could say?
"Anonymous selection.
Nature teases every day.
Darwin's own evolution,
On conceptual display."
"How could this happen to me?"
Say the old, say the young.
Their body filled with disease.
Have they already been judged?
The Chaosmos don't notice
Those good of heart, from the sour.
There is no aligned focus,
That decides whom to devour.
The cosmos are indifferent
To your sex or your status.
Charity money you spent
Doesn't buy you advantage.
Things will happen to people,
Things held sacred, property,
The church, preacher, the steeple,
To you, and even to me.
The victim will plead, "why me?
Why am I cast with that lot?"
To which the only reply
Is the inquiry, "why not?"
Said she, quaint with a smile.
But, by the tone of her please,
She placed her god on trial.
"It's cosmic indifference."
Crass, came my overt reply.
And it didn't relinquish
The sorrow caught in her eyes.
